Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities

Basic Chart

Use the following chart (scroll down) to help you assess your child's emotional development. These core six functional emotional developmental capacities are essential in the development of a person's capacity for engagement, relating, communicating, thinking, and reasoning.

You can also sign up for a virtual consultation to learn more about the child development process and explore how DIR Floortime® may be able to help you and your child(ren).

**Not under Stress: Children sometimes do not show some of the above abilities when under stress (e.g., hunger, anger, fatigue). In these stressful situations, it is better to help them self-regulate (capacity 1) before helping them to move up the developmental ladder (move into the next stages).
