Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities

Basic Chart

Use the following chart (scroll down) to help you assess your child's emotional development. These core six functional emotional developmental capacities are essential for a person to be able to engage, relate, communicate, think, and reason.

You can also sign up for a virtual consultation to learn more about the child development process and explore how DIR Floortime® may be able to help you and your child(ren).

**Not under Stress: Children sometimes do not show some of the above abilities when under stress (e.g. hunger, anger, fatigue). In these stress situations it is better to help them to self-regulate (capacity 1) before helping them to move up the developmental ladder (move into the next stages).
