ICDL's CEO, Dr. Guenzel, speaks at the ANISA World Autism Acceptance Day event.
Stephen Shore, EdD
World Renowned Autistic Self-Advocate and Autism Expert
With an autobiographical structure combining experiences of people on the autism spectrum and other neurodiverse conditions, this course focuses on making fulfilling and productive lives for individuals with differences the rule rather than the exception. Participants are charged to reframe their thinking away from deficit and disorder, towards seeking abilities based on individual strengths. The session ends with generalizing focus on strengths-based thinking to the rest of humanity – and finally, to the audience themselves.
Instructional method: Live Online lecture.
No prerequisites
Participants will understand and be able to discuss the context of awareness and acceptance as a pathway towards appreciation where autistic and neurodiverse people are valued for whom they are.
Participants will be able to describe at least 2 examples where a perceived weakness can be considered as a strength for leading a fulfilling and productive life.
Participants will be able to create at least 2 examples demonstrating one’s own transition from thinking of autism and other neurodiverse conditions in terms of deficit, disorder, and disability to an abilities based model by asking what *can* the individual do.
