This course will describe the intersection of motor development and social and emotional development. It will outline the DIRFloortime® theory and strategies that will enhance pediatric physical therapy practice and optimize physical therapy outcomes for individuals with functional limitations in tactile, proprioceptive processing, vestibular processing, coordination, motor planning, motor learning, balance, postural control, regulation and engagement. Building on an introductory knowledge of the FEDCs and DIRFloortime, this course will describe the neuroscientific basis for why using DIRFloortime in conjunction with traditional pediatric physical therapy practices will enhance PT outcomes and goal attainment.
Pre-requisite: DIR 101
The purpose of this course is to educate pediatric physical therapists as to the critical importance of integrating DIRFloortime® concepts within their practice to maximize developmental outcomes. The course will touch on 3 main concepts:
Differentiation between motor planning/praxis and motor learning, taking into consideration individual differences in development
The neuroscience of regulation for learning
In order to support the growing number of neurodivergent clients who require PT, practitioners must grow and develop to support differences in motor development.

Identify and define the basic neuroscience of regulation and co-regulation as a gateway to learning.
Describe the relevance of differences in motor development in pediatric PT.
