The DIR 101 course is the introduction to the DIR model and Floortime. It is a 12-hour course taught both live online (via Zoom) and onsite throughout the world. Please click on the links below to view current offerings in both formats.

Course Description
This is an introductory course that reviews the theoretical framework, scientific evidence, and scope of application of the model promoting functional emotional developmental capacities, reflective thinking, and overall mental health for all children and adults, including those with developmental disabilities.
Learning Objectives
Identify at least three common features of autism and other challenges of relating and communicating.
Identify at least four key features of relationship-based approaches.
Describe all 6 Functional Emotional Developmental Capacities (FEDCs) in the DIR® model and potential challenges that children face at each capacity.
Describe at least three characteristics of how individual differences (the "I" in DIR®), including health, sensory processing, and regulatory challenges, can impact a child's development.
Identify at least three key principles and basic strategies of Floortime.
Describe at least three characteristics of relationship and family in the DIR® model.
Describe the essential role of affect as it is related to the D, the I, and the R.

Course Interaction: This live webinar is fully interactive. Attendees may ask and answer questions throughout the presentation and participate in instructor-led discussions.

Attendance is required to complete this course. Students in live online courses must have a device (PC, Mac, Tablet, Smartphone) with a microphone. ICDL provides the software for the course.
Target Audience: As an introductory course to the theoretical model and practical application of DIR, this course is intended for a range of practitioners from fields including: Speech and Language Pathologists, mental health specialists such as Counselors, Psychologists or Social Workers; Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists and Educators. This course is also beneficial for anyone else interested in learning about DIR and DIRFloortime including parents, caregivers, and paraprofessionals.

Continuing Education Credits & Professional Development Hours
ICDL provides continuing education (CE) credits for certain professions. These CE credits are only available for courses ICDL offers directly. Available continuing education varies by course offering. Please check the specific course offering for continuing education information. The links to various DIR 101 offerings are listed on top of this page. Please note that although the DIR 101 course is 12 hours long, only 11 hours are deemed as learning time/contact hours for continuing education, per the guidelines of the various professional boards for which we award CE. Currently, many of ICDL DIR 101 courses offer professional continuing education credits for:

Please check each individual course offering for available professional continuing education credits as we have different continuing education pages and approvals for different courses and conferences.
In addition to courses offered by ICDL, our course catalog will also display courses licensed by ICDL that use the ICDL curriculum and are fully approved by ICDL to be official DIRFloortime® courses. However, ICDL does not provide CE credits for these courses. These are all clearly marked. Please contact the provider of any ICDL licensed courses to inquire about CE credits.
