Children and Babies with Mood Swings: New Insights for Parents and Professionals

By Stanley I. Greenspan, MD (Author), Ira Glovinsky, PhD (Author), Cindy Glovinsky, MSW (Author)

Addressing the challenges of living with a child whose moods are extreme and unpredictable, this book transcends traditional tendencies and diagnoses by discussing mood swings in terms of how they develop, instead of presenting the reader with the usual list of symptoms and treatments. The complex interplay between children's emotional states and the various developmental milestones that lie along the pathway to adulthood are described, offering hope to parents by giving them a whole new way of looking at an old problem that paradoxically seems to be increasing in modern times.

Floortime DVD Training Series

Floortime DVD Training Series
Meant to supplement the child's work with professionals, the Floortime DVD Training Series shows parents how to use the Floortime approach to help their child relate and communicate. The series was developed by acclaimed child development experts Stanley I. Greenspan MD and Serena Wieder, PhD, creators of the DIR® approach for children with autism and other special needs. The method, known more familiarly as Floortime, encourages parents to get down on the floor with their child, following his lead and natural interests in play, entering his world to help him connect with others.

The Floortime DVD Training series, presented by the Floortime Foundation on behalf of the Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and Learning Disorders (ICDL), is available in three DVD sets, each at $79.95.

  • The first set, "The Basics: Relating and Communicating," shows parents how to interact with their child to support his development, from shared attention and engagement to interaction and more advanced communication.
  • The second set, "Sensory Regulation and Social Interaction," shows parents how to help a child overcome challenges of sensory regulation that interfere with his ability to relate and communicate, enabling him to reach higher developmental levels, including social interaction and pretend play.
  • The third set, "Symbolic and Logical Thinking," shows parents how to use pretend play to help their child create and connect ideas, and to think logically.
Each DVD set features interviews of Drs. Greenspan and Wieder; video of them working with individual children and their parents to demonstrate how to put Floortime principles into action; and a supplementary guide with transcripts, information about the Floortime approach and a parent questionnaire.

Clinical Practice Guidelines: Redefining the Standards of Care for Infants, Children, and Families with Special Needs

Clinical Practice Guidelines: Redefining the Standards of Care for Infants, Children, and Families with Special NeedsIncreasing numbers of young children are presenting with non-progressive developmental disorders involving compromises in the capacity to relate, communicate, and think. These disorders involve many different areas of developmental functioning, ranging from planning motor actions and comprehending sounds to generating ideas and reflecting on feelings. New research and clinical observations are making it possible to more fully identify these functional developmental capacities and, thereby, characterize each child and family according to their unique profile. Most important, these new observations enable clinicians to individualize assessment and intervention approaches in response to the child- and family-specific question, "WHAT IS THE BEST APPROACH FOR A GIVEN CHILD AND FAMILY?"

Over the years, the disciplines that work with developmental disorders have constructed a large body of research and clinical experience on the functional developmental capacities that are impaired in disorders of relating, thinking and communicating.  This knowledge, however, needed to be brought together and organized.  In response to this need, The Interdisciplinary Council on Developmental and Learning Disorders (ICDL) launched an initiative to systematize current clinical knowledge, including both research and the clinical experience of disciplines such as speech pathology, developmental pediatrics, neurology, occupational and physical therapy, psychology, social work, special education, and child psychiatry.  The result of this effort is the ICDL CLINICAL PRACTICE GUIDELINES.

To promote the widest possible use of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for the benefit of infants, children, and families with special needs, any information from this volume may be downloaded and disseminated without charge.

The Journal of Developmental Processes Volume 1, Fall 2006.

The Journal of Developmental Processes (JDP) focuses on the complex and dynamic biological, social, and cultural aspects of developmental systems in humans and other animals. New in 2006, it is jointly sponsored by ICDL, The Council on Human Development (www.councilhd.ca) and the Milton and Ethel Harris Research Initiative (www.mehri.ca) and expands on and replaces the Journal of Developmental and Learning Disorders. It includes all the disciplines that contribute to our understanding of human development, the factors that influence it, the mechanisms through which they work, and the enormous variations observed throughout the course of life. The JDP embraces clinical studies and case descriptions in keeping with the traditions established by its predecessor, the Journal of Developmental and Learning Disorders. It also, however, focuses on a broad range of studies and narratives that are necessary for a full understanding of developmental processes. Excerpt from Issue 1 Editorial: “Scientists, clinicians, educators, and others who study aspects of development may now embrace an array of exciting options. We can seek to discover, for example, precisely how mammalian/primate/human nurturing interactions that surround the genes affect developmental outcomes; how emotions are created by, and in turn help create, the processes of the brain; and how the social, cultural, and indeed global interdependencies that make up our world affect all living creatures in it.”
