In some communities parents have access to a professional who can put the pieces together, monitor progress, and suggest changes in the therapy program. Often a therapist or the professional who did the original workup, fulfills this extremely helpful role.

Finding the right therapists and creating this type of program takes effort. It may be necessary to convince therapists to work with the child in a way that differs from the therapists' usual approach or to put together a program that is more intensive and comprehensive than what is generally offered. Some needed services may fall outside the scope of what a community is legally required to provide; others may fall outside the scope of insurance coverage. Such problems limit the ability of some families to provide comprehensive treatment for their children. We hope that as new diagnostic codes are adopted—broadening the definitions of severe disorders—regulations will change and these services will be easier to obtain. Meanwhile, the heart of the intervention is within each family's reach—daily floor time with the child.
