FIRST REGIONAL DIR® INSTITUTE OPENS IN ATLANTA:
Southeast Regional DIR® Training Center Welcomes Participants
Drawing professionals from all over the Southeast, Barbara Dunbar, PhD and Kathleen Platzman, PhD are spearheading the first DIR®/FLOORTIME™ regional DIR® (“Developmental, Individualized, Relationship-Based”) educational program in the nation through Floortime Atlanta. Launched in September 2008, the first class welcomed multi-disciplinary participants from around the region.
The Southeast Regional Training Center program will focus on individual growth and development in the Floortime model, with an emphasis on clinical and analytical skills. Dunbar and Platzman and other members of Floortime Atlanta will teach and provide tutoring. The course runs nine months, highlighted by five 15-hour weekend trainings in Atlanta, featuring lectures, participant case presentations, live observation and assessment, and group discussions. Between weekend intensives, students will meet regularly in small phone consultation groups and receive five hours of individual consultation with faculty members, either in person or by phone.
Students will receive support, guidance and feedback throughout the year as they broaden and deepen their understanding of DIR® philosophy and techniques. In addition, this course can serve as an entry to an advanced level standing at the annual Summer DIR® Institute.
“Becoming immersed in and conversant with the DIR® approach to intervention is our first and most important goal for every participant” Dr. Dunbar noted. “We are aiming for all students to be prepared for a great DIR-C Institute experience after which they will go on to get a Certificate with ease.” All of the clinicians at Floortime Atlanta are hoping for a wide circle of DIR® colleagues and strengthened regional interest and resources through well-trained clinicians. “My vision is to expand regional DIR® provider conferences, networks, and ongoing course work through the Regional Training Center model,” Dr. Platzman stated. “We know there is interest in other sections of the country and we promise to keep in touch and let everyone know how the year unfolds.”
Indeed, similar Regional DIR® Training Institutes may be coming to the West Coast, Chicago, NYC and other areas in the future.
Barbara Dunbar, PhD and Kathy Platzman, PhD are both Licensed Psychologists. They are two of four Floortime Atlanta clinicians who serve on the National Training Faculty of the DIR®/Floortime™ Institute. For more information go to: (www.floortimeatlanta.com)
